We are a small Plumbing, Heating and Gas business located in Derby, working nationwide.
We started out as Shaw's Plumbing and Heating as a Sole trader in April 2016. In August 2018 we changed to Shaw's Heating Limited.
As of February 2024, we have 3 engineers an apprentice and an administrator on board combining over 30 years experience in the industry.

Mark has been involved in the industry since 2008, going from full time college to starting an apprenticeship in 2010 with Ambervale Heating. During the apprenticeship, Mark learnt from multiple senior engineers in various areas of the industry including; servicing and breakdowns, installation and general plumbing. After completing the Level 3 Apprenticeship in 2013 he stayed employed with Ambervale Heating until 2016 when he decided he wanted a new challenge with running his own business and so Shaw's Plumbing and Heating was born.
For the first 2 years of Shaw's, we undertook boiler installations, servicing, breakdowns, bathroom installations and general plumbing.
In 2018 business was looking good for Shaw's Heating and we were advised to go limited and in August that year we became, Shaw's Heating Ltd. From this point the company has grown at a natural pace. We have also since grown into other sectors of the industry including; modular construction, commercial gas and renewable heating.
We moved into our current premises in 2021 and grew into a team of 4 with the primary ethos of our business remaining good customer care and giving our best advice based on the knowledge we have. We now primarily focus on heating installations and design while still undertaking things like; gas boiler servicing and breakdowns, landlords checks and general plumbing.
Comments from Mark
I am always looking to give my customers the best advice and recommendations for them based on what I know. It is for this reason that I am always looking to broaden my knowledge of heating by completing extra industry courses whenever I can. In the last 3 years I have completed; Heating Academy Northampton - Hydronics and System Design Course, Heat Geek - Awakening and Mastery and Heat Pump Enlightenment, Vaillant UK - Various manufacturers courses (controls, boilers, ASHP), Viessmann - ASHP and 200 boilers, Mitsubishi Ecodan - Installation, controls and servicing, Intergas boilers - Installation and servicing, LG Therma V R32, Installation, Daikin Altherma - Level 1 and 2.
With the above CPD (Continued professional development), I am confident I can design systems and fault find to the highest standard and also give transparent advice that is sometimes misconstrued via newspaper articles and social media campaigns. I can assure you that air source heat pumps do work well and can be cheaper to run than a gas boiler if designed right! My aim is to pass as much information on to my colleagues so that the same level of service is always given no matter which Shaw's employee comes out.
Finally, I would like to say, I am in this industry to do the job right and don't believe in selling something for the sake of it like other companies do. We will always try and repair a boiler where we can rather than just take the easy option and sell you a new one. We also believe in doing an installation because it's good for the property not just because it's payback is good over 'x' amount of years. I personally think this is an old fashioned mindset and we should be focused on what we are leaving behind for the next person and not whether you can get your money back in savings in the shortest amount of time. This industry seems to be one of the few that gets scrutinised in this way and I believe it holds us back from doing what's best. After all, no one buys a new car and wonders how long it will take them to get their money back in fuel savings or has new windows installed and wonders how long it will take for them to make their money back from savings on their gas bills. I'd recommend listening to Nathan Gambling's Beta talk podcast for more honest opinions on the heating industry (I am in no way affiliated or sponsored by the aforementioned podcast).
Thank you for taking the time to read this, we look forward to either continuing working for you if we've already met and look forward to broadening our network if we've not already worked for you before.
Many thanks,
Mark Shaw
Simon AKA Bully has been put through his paces since joining the company. Having come into the industry later on in his career there was a lot for him to learn. Often thrown in at the deep end and forced to learn fast, he has shown true professionalism and taken every challenge and opportunity in front of him with both hands and has now become a great heating engineer and installer. He now holds a full gas engineer qualification with multiple other qualifications and CPD. Bully has become a great friend, colleague and asset to the company and we look forward to watching him go from strength to strength. In 2023 Simon completed his Heat pumps installation and maintenance course and has been involved in several installs since.
Phil has been in the Industry for over 15 years, bringing a wide knowledge of plumbing and heating. He and Mark first worked together in 2014 at Ambervale Heating and have always had great working relationship and are also good friends outside of the business. Similarly to Simon Phil has always been looking to further his abilities by undertaking a number of CPD courses. He is qualified in domestic gas and has completed a Heat Pump course through Shaw's amongst other things
Jake is another that has come into the industry slightly later on in his career. Having been stuck in an office job for the past few years, he decided it was time for a change. Jake was recommended to us by a local gas training centre as a keen person looking for a way into the industry and after an interview and a short trial with us, it was clear to see he was ready to apply himself and work hard. As of June 2024 Jake has 80% completed his course work towards his gas qualification and is keen to keep expanding his knowledge. He's always asking questions and showing a real interest in every job he faces. We are looking forward to watching Jake grow as an engineer and look forward to working with him for years to come.
Harriet has come into the industry after (and still) working in care for the past 7 years. She's very organised and efficient; taking calls, organising the diaries and book keeping and more. Without her help and determined attitude, Shaw's Heating wouldn't have been able to continue to grow in the way it has. Harriet has gained so much confidence in her role since the beginning and is always willing to take on jobs beyond her role. We look forward to continuing working together going forward.
Frank is the 1st apprentice we had but unfortunately he didn't like being in the passenger seat of the van so we had to find him another role. Naturally, Frank is a people person so Human resources was a great fit. Always one to offer a cuddle if someone is struggling and he loves creating all the team bonding games. He's currently working on developing an Air source treat pump but is finding it hard to get any financial backing.
